PembahasanAccording to Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, nuclear power plant is being or using the power produced when the nucleus of an atom is divided or joined to another nucleus. It is a way to produce very huge energy using uranium as its fuel. The atom division of uranium happens in nuclear reactor in order to produce the heat. The heat then will be used to generate steam inside the steam generator, and the steam will be used to activate the turbine and generator to produce electricity.
Firstly, let’s talk about the advantanges of this energy source. Many people think that nuclear energy is very expensive, but in fact, it is relatively low cost. The reason is that nuclear energy is cost-competitive. Generating electricity in nuclear reactors is cheaper than electricity generating from oil, gas and coal (non-renewable energy resources). But, the initial construction costs of nuclear power plants are large. On top of this, when the power plants first have been built, we are left with the costs to enrich and process the nuclear fuel (e.g. uranium), control and get rid of nuclear waste, as well as the maintenance of the plant. Nuclear power plant is also reducing the pollution and greenhouse effect because it produce low pollution than other non-renewable power plant. The amount of energy released in a nuclear fission reaction is estimated ten million times greater than the amount released in burning a fossil fuel atom (e.g. oil and gas). Therefore, the amount of fuel required in a nuclear power plant is much smaller compared to those of other types of power plants.
Now, let’s talk about the disadvantages. The radioactive waste of nuclear power plant could be a threat to the environment and is highly dangerous for humans, animals and plants. Do you know about Fukushima Daiichi Accident, 11 March 2011? It was a nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Ōkuma, Fukushima Prefecture. The disaster was caused by a major earthquake Tōhoku earthquake and a 15-metre tsunami. All three cores largely melted in the first three days. But luckily, it only caused 1 cancer death attributed to radiation exposure. No one will ever be able to avoid these disaster.
